Spin Digital Video Technologies GmbH (Spin Digital), a German company specialized in high-performance video codecs for the next generation of high-quality video applications, has joined LPGPU2, an EU consortium composed of technology companies and universities collaborating on tools for low-power parallel computing using GPUs.
Low-power GPUs have become ubiquitous; they can be found in several devices ranging from mobile phones, Virtual and Augmented Reality, to automotive systems. A wide range of applications are appearing that demand even higher graphics performance including: VR and AR, camera processing, and high quality video playback. The LPGPU2 project proposes to aid application developers by providing a complete performance and power analysis toolset.
Spin Digital has developed an industry leader HEVC/H.265 codec that, due to its very high performance, can be used for the next generation of ultra-high quality video including 4K, 8K and beyond. Target applications include UHD-TV (both 4K and 8K), high quality VR, video walls, and immersive spaces.
Spin Digital will contribute its expertise in video codecs and media players to LPGPU2, and during the project time Spin digital will optimize its HEVC/H.265 codec to achieve even higher performance and lower power, specially for mobile and embedded devices. New graphics APIs such as DirectX12 and Vulkan will be integrated into Spin Digital software for enabling the performance and power efficiency required by emerging media applications.
The LPGPU2 project has received 2.97 million Euros in funding from the Horizon 2020 Research & Innovation Programme of the European Union under Grant Agreement 688759, and will run from January 2016 to June 2018. The consortium includes, apart from Spin Digital, three European technology companies: Codeplay, the Edinburgh based GPU technology company, Think Silicon (a Greek low gate-count Graphics Semiconductor IP Core company) and Samsung Electronics UK Ltd. TU-Berlin (Germany), a European University, completes the group.
